The Programme
Technological innovation has changed the way tourism works: hotel bookings via internet have overtaken those made through travel agencies.
In Italy in particular, tourism is in the lead for web sales: online transactions for tourist products rose from 300 million Euro in 2003 to 800 in 2004, and then rocketed further to 1,200 million in 2005, accounting for no less than 43% of electronic commerce as a whole.
Hand in hand with the sales channels, the communication strategies have changed too, now all web-based. Via the internet the tour operators, the large networks of agencies and the carriers can reach all types of clients.
The web has hence become a potent marketing medium, providing operators with real-time information on the pricing policies of competitors as well as continually renewed channels for sale and for interaction with customers.
